The Secretaries Billiards Cup saw both players playing off scratch and it was the wizardry of Stuart Williamson that took him to a 250-216 success over the ingenious play of Ian Janman.

The Lanaway Doubles brought together the pairing of the mighty Mark Bright the canny Frank Childs against the spectacular Mark Coles and the battler Andy Healey, the latter won the opening frame 62-27 then to find their opponents shape up to take the following frames 73-41, 60-35, 84-8 seeing Bright building breaks of 36 and 31.

The Open Championship was always going to be a sizzler, Dave Morgan playing his free flowing snooker opened with a 62-14 success against the flamboyant Mark Coles, Coles retaliated in the second frame winning 70-48. Morgan dominated the next two frames winning 63-25 and 70-14, Coles now chomping on his cigars stormed back taking the fifth 68-29. The enthusiastic audience were now anticipating a final frame shootout as Coles commenced his trade mark break building, alas as secured a fine pot on the blue, he found the cue ball screwing back into the middle pocket, the mischievous Morgan pounced to turn the frame around winning 68-43, Morgan produced breaks of 61 and 54 during his 4-2 frames victory.

When two top guns came to the table to battle for the Dennis Wakeford Trophy the expectations were high for a thrilling final, this was so as the brilliance of Neil baker shone in his 70-32 success in the snooker category with the feared Kevin Ward responding in the billiards frame flowing home 100-33, the three red snooker decider was extremely tactical with Ward edging out Baker 21-13.

Ian Janman and Stuart Williamson returned to the green baize to contend the Denman Cup Billiards Final which saw Williamson showing great confidence when gaining the double by ousting Janman 400-298.

The Charity Trebles was going to be intriguing as as brought together the debutants from Ansty who received a 79 cumulative points handicap and the experienced trio from Clayton. The meticulous Shaun Malins edged the wily Steve West 38-37 with the storming Lea Jump giving the mighty Mark Coles a tough frame but going down 72-59. With Ansty’s 79 handicap coming into contention it meant that Clayton’s articulate Andy Healey had to pull back a 67 deficit over the marauding Luke Malins, a fine 26 break by Healey put pressure on Malins and the frame moved on to keep the excited audience on their toes as it reached the stage with the final pink and black balls remaining, Malins requiring just the pink, Healey both balls. It was a nervy situation as Mailns potted the pink but to find the cue ball following into the pocket, with heart beating Healey still required both balls but in his next attempt he left the pink in another potable position, with pulse racing Malins sunk the match winning ball to achieve 33 points against Healey’s 89 to give Ansty a team 209-198 victory.

The match officials throughout the finals day were Dennis Wakeford, Norman Green, Willem Mol, David Page, Martin Payne, Steve Barton and Roy Tucknott.
