The Mid Sussex Billiards and Snooker League launches the new season with a 12 aside Interleague Snooker Challenge against Lewes to be played at the Uckfield Club on Monday 6th September commencing 7.30pm. The players representing the A Team will be Mark Coles, Mark Bright, Martin Batchelor, Wayne Hamilton, Neil Baker and Kevin Ward. The B Team sees Tim Pang making his debut where he will receive strong support from Lee Morley, Derek Carr, Lee Cannizarro, Denis O’Rourke and Calum Thomsett. A new venture for the league is the introduction of the Mays Monday Cup which sees the preliminary round being played on Monday 13th September. This snooker cup will be competed for by teams from Thursday Divisions Two and Three alongside Wednesday One and Two. At the champagne launch, Brian Mays who came up with the original idea was joined by his USC F colleagues to make the inaugural draw. The preliminary round: Franklands Village A v. Hassocks F, Lindfield D v. Hassocks D, Hassocks G v. USC F, Ansty D v. Horsted Keynes A, USC B v. USC G. In 1974, the President at that time Leslie J. Clake, presented the under 21 Snooker Junior Cup which was won by Neil Sayers, Hurstpierpoint. The tournament was competed for during each season through to 2001 when James Dew, Hassocks, last lifted the trophy. With the league looking at new ideas for the development of the talent of the younger generation, the cup will be re-launched with a round robin competition at the Clayton and Keymer Royal British Legion on Sunday 26th September commencing at 12noon. On Tuesday 5th October at Clayton, the Billiards Interleague Team sees a new fixture added to their calendar when they will entertain an extremely talented Hurst Green 6 aside squad. Later in the month on the 11th at the United Services Club, four snooker tables have been reserved for the visit of East Grinstead’s A and Grandmasters 5 aside teams with Horsham bringing their A and under 21 teams, this will give the Middies the opportunity to further enhance their development programme for the local youth.
