Scaynes Hill A Team Profile

Representing Scaynes Hill Social Club, Scaynes Hill A is made up of Richard Pledger(Captain), Malcolm Stevens, Graham Steven, Nigel Steven, John Main, Michael Main and John Hopkins. A seasoned side, who can enjoy a Wednesday night out, even if they don’t win!

Following several seasons of being ‘runners –up’ in the cup competitions, we really need to take that ‘one more step’ this year.

Richard Pledger

Although the newest member of our squad, Richard has found it easy to step into the sizeable shoes of our previous captain. Richard’s upbringing in South London rubbing shoulders with household names like Vinnie Jones and Jimmy White unfortunately didn’t lead to an exciting career in sport, but rather a financial one working for Lloyds of London. This may be on of the reasons for his natural style of ‘do or die’ on the green baize.

Malcolm Stevens

Malcolm ‘if only that blue had gone in’ Stevens, the first of our Stevens twins. A steady player never able to quite get the results of his youth. However, Malcolm is a real stalwart of our team and we treasure the stories he tells about him and his brothers growing up in Sussex in the fifties. Malcolm’s hobby of keeping and breeding piranha fish ensures that we never visit his house!

Graham Stevens

The Ice Man. Graham, the other twin, just plays it cool and never ever gives up when playing snooker. Graham, in his youth played regularly for Sussex, turning semi-pro in the seventies, before a nasty tractor accident put paid to a promising career. Graham’s performances are central to the success of our team. Graham owns and breeds race horses when not playing snooker.

Nigel Stevens

Nigel ‘the kid’ Stevens is Graham’s son and needless to say a ‘chip off the old block’. At number 3 in the Mid Sussex League rankings, he has the ability to beat anyone on the day. Often giving a master class in potting and positional play that the rest of us can only dream about. Nigel married young at 16 to his childhood sweetheart Sharon and now lives in Chailey in the house that he built himself.

John Main

John’s steady style of play sometimes hides his tremendous potting ability. This, combined with his break building this makes him, on his day, one of our best players. Unfortunately John cannot always afford the time to be playing snooker, as his role as MD of a large Nursery Gardening business often drags him away from our shores.

Michael Main

The younger of the Main brothers. Michael is another steady player who knows how to grind out a win. Often playing last and turning that 2-2 score into a 3-2 win. Not only capable of ‘pulling a rabbit out of the hat’ on the snooker table, Michael is also a member of the Magic Circle. You may also hear the occasional French swear word...Michael is fluent in French after living in France for several years.

John Hopkins

John ‘Cavalier’ Hopkins plays his games without a care in the world. Often crashing in long pots that can often panic an opponent into submission. Win or lose it’s always fun to watch. John is a true ‘Scaynes Hill-ite’, living in the village all his life, and until a few years ago being part owner of The Farmers pub.
